Info from Alwyn Cosgrove
By Chris
Wednesday, Mar 10, 2010 07:42
Jake and Benny just got back from a seminar in Cali by renowned weight loss expert Alwyn Cosgrove. I love Alwyn's message because he always has the research to back it up. Two studies in particular caught my eye (send me an email if you would like to know the names of the studies). One study had two groups attempting to lose body fat. The first group performed 20 weeks of steady state aerobic exercise (such as 45 min on the elliptical) and burned over 28,000 calories during their workouts. The second group performed 16 weeks of interval training and burned just over 14,000 calories during their workouts. Even though the second group only burned half the calories of the first group they lost twice as much subcutaneous body fat. It's like we always say around here - work harder not longer. The other interseting study I saw had to deal with arm circumference. My athlete always want to add arm work after their workouts. We might bust our tails for two hours but they still feel the need to do curls and pushdowns at the end. In this study two groups performed a 12 week total body strength training routine, while one group added extra arm exercises at the end of their workouts. At the end of the study their was no statistical difference between the two groups for arm circumference. Push/Pull in multiple planes and you train all of your muscles. Talk to you soon.

Another Mike Wareing Finisher
By Chris
Monday, Feb 22, 2010 02:41

Everyone on the staff at Wareing's Gym loves to polish off their training session with a short bout of intense, anaerobic activity (Finishers). It's great for your heart, helps elevate your metabolism, and even if the rest of your workout sucked the finisher leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment. This is how Mike had me finish my session today:

All exercises performed with a 10lb medicine ball. 5 sets.

 - 15 sec explosive push-ups, alternating hand on the ball

 - 15 sec rest

 - 15 sec squat jumps

 - 15 sec rest

 - 15 sec mountain climbers (hands on ball)

 - 15 sec rest

 - 15 sec split jumps

Penance
By Chris
Tuesday, Jan 26, 2010 09:06

It happens to everybody. I ate terribly on Sunday. Bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, pancakes, Taco Bell, sausage - not to mention the Bourbon. Oh well, what are you gonna do? You have to blow it out every once in a while to truly appreciate all of the times you behave, right? Anyway, I punished myself with Monday's workout as a penance for my poor dietary practices.

Push Press x 6/Depth Drop x 6/Drop Step Chop w/ JC Band x 10 each side = 4 sets

Barbell Squat Press (135) x 8/JC Band Sweeps (fast) x 20 = 3 sets

KB (35) Single Leg Squats x 6 each/Hand Stand Push-ups x 10/Tubing Torso Twists (fast) x 10 each side = 3 sets

DB Hammer Curls w/ DB Push-ups workdown set - 50 to 30, 10 reps each every 5

30 sec shuttles/30 sec rest x 3 sets

Purification through PAIN!!!
